Children’s Sleep Awareness Month 2026: Teach Sleep Initiative

In February, we are excited to once again observe Children’s Sleep Awareness Month, and we warmly encourage everyone to participate in this vital campaign.

Every young child merits the gift of a peaceful night’s rest, but for numerous households, achieving consistent and restorative sleep often seems elusive. Far from being an indulgence, quality sleep stands as a cornerstone for supporting children’s physical development, emotional stability, and cognitive learning capabilities.

For this year’s observance, developed collaboratively with YouHQ, the central theme revolves around “Teach Sleep”, placing particular emphasis on the influential position of educational institutions in cultivating enduring sleep practices among young people. Our goal is to equip educators, school administrators, students, and their families with straightforward, approachable, and captivating resources that simplify sleep education efforts.

Insights from recent wellbeing assessments conducted by YouHQ highlight the profound connection between sleep quality and students’ emotional states during school hours. From the inception of their platform, sleep has been documented more than 51,000 times as a primary determinant of pupils’ daily feelings, positioning it among the top influencers of overall wellbeing. Alarmingly, disruptions in sleep emerge as the leading cause of adverse moods. Such findings underscore a fundamental truth: enhanced sleep directly correlates with improved coping mechanisms, academic performance, and positive emotional experiences for children.

Educational environments hold a distinctive advantage in fostering positive sleep behaviors. Optimal rest enhances focus, self-regulation of emotions, conduct, school attendance, and psychological resilience. Engaging in Children’s Sleep Awareness Month allows schools to create enduring positive effects, extending far beyond the February timeframe into the entire calendar year.

To facilitate involvement, we have assembled a complimentary, all-inclusive Supporter’s Pack brimming with practical, ready-to-implement materials tailored for both primary and secondary school contexts. This resource collection encompasses detailed lesson plans, interactive classroom exercises, eye-catching printable posters, customizable social media graphics, soothing audio soundscapes, and comprehensive advice tailored for parents and caregivers. All components are available for instant download and crafted to integrate seamlessly into demanding school schedules, enabling teachers to initiate meaningful discussions on sleep while motivating incremental adjustments that yield substantial long-term benefits.

A standout element within the pack is a captivating animation, generously supported by our partners Simba and Dreamspace. This engaging video guides children through an adventurous exploration, unveiling a remarkable superpower within themselves, its extraordinary value, and practical strategies for nurturing and preserving it effectively.

Additionally, HushAway has contributed a selection of free soundscapes specifically designed for use by teachers and parents alike. These audio tools are intended to soothe, balance, and assist children amid their hectic routines, with easy access provided through a QR code featured in the supporter materials.

Schools and families can participate in diverse ways, such as organizing dedicated theme-based assemblies, designing informative sleep-themed display boards, launching challenges to encourage improved bedtime rituals among students, or distributing helpful guidance to parents. Each initiative contributes to heightened awareness. By uniting our efforts, we can destigmatize open dialogues about sleep and furnish children with essential skills to achieve truly rejuvenating rest.

Let us transform February into the pivotal period when prioritizing sleep elevates it to the forefront of educational and family priorities!
